The Tuskegee Airmen

I hope you all enjoyed the Tuskegee Airmen. The movie should serve as inspiration for all of us, regardless of skin color. I know it does for me.

In one of our blogs last month, we discussed whether or not MLK's dream has been realized. We tied that discussion into the recent inauguration of Barack Obama. Tuskegee Airmen fought in World War II, many years before MLK would do his work and deleiver the "I Have a Dream" speech, and more than 50 years before Obama would be elected our first African-American president.

It would have been easy for those black pilots to give up on their dream, many did by walking away. What lessons do you think the movie provides for us? How do you feel about the movie? Do you think that the story of the Tuskegee pilots should taught more widely in school? This is a pretty wide-open blog. Stick to the general subject, but feel free to talk either about the movie or about the topic of the Tuskegee Airmen in general.

I posting links and video clips with more information about the pilots. Take time to look them over. If you are working on this at school, you will not be able to view the YouTube videos.

  1. This movie defenetly teaches us that all men or women are equal. Also to never give up on your dream. The pilots in the movie had to go through alot of challenges just to get to the military base. They had to get licences, and go to school ect. From the military base until it was time for the pilots to go out in the battle feild ( which some of them didn't:), they lost friends and had to go through more training. Through it all they all reached their dream: they were pilots. The one person who lived acomplished his dream because he bacame captain and was awarded medals he never thought he would get because of his skin color.

  2. many lessons were provided for us within the movie. When many of the pilots walked away from the base because they thought that they couldn't do it, lee, the main character stayed and followed his dream even though people put him down because of his skin color. Lee knew what he wanted to do, and he accomplished that by not stopping and leaving because of critisism. The lesson here is that you shouldn't stop going for your dream just because people put you down.I believe that the movie was great, and enjoyed seeing these African-American pilots acheiving their goals. I did think that it was a little violent though. whoever made this movie deffinatly got the message out that African Americans can do everything white men can. There was lots of action. I deffinatly think that this story of these African American piolots should be taught more widly in schools because it is very important. Not only did these men at Tuskegee change the way white people saw them, these men changed the way the nation saw them.

  4. the movie is a great insperation to every one every where to never give up your dreams. the air men had a dream, some gave up but others followed it and it paid off. this story should definetly be taught mor oppenly.

  5. the movie taught us that you should always try and never give up even if people are trying to make you not seceed. It also shows us that all men and women are equal no matter what color they are. I think that the tuskegee airman should be taught more widely in school because it were the first or around the first african american pilots.

  6. I think that this movie has many lessons to be learned. First, it teaches us that if you really want something you never give up even if people tell you that you should give up or you see something that might change your mind, (in this case, when the men were first flying one of the pilots crashed and died, but the men still went on to become graduates of the school). Also the movie teaches us that whatever skin color you are or gender we are all equal. I really enjoyed the movie. Like Adam said it was a little violent but it was still a good movie and I think that everyone should see it before they die. I liked how it had some sad parts but in the end Lee was requested by a white pilot who had not wanted to believe that African-American pilots had saved his butt, to fly in Berlin with him as backup. It really shows how much people can change. I do believe that the story of the Tuskegee Airmen is really inspiring and that it should be taught more in school. I know for a fact that middle school kids today don't really understand the big racial difference back then and now, all they know is that it was bad and unequal. But I think if they were to watch this movie and others similar to it, then it would change their outlook a lot.

  7. This movie showed many people how racist people could be before the civil rights movements. If you did not notice in the movie, the very racist officer wanted all the blacks to fail.

It showed how if you are being segregated, you should still prevail and try your hardest. The one thing Louis, the english lit. man didn't do. He just gave up. Same with the man the broke and killed himself.

The main point of the movie was don't let other people tell you you can't do something. If you try hard enough, you can prove them wrong and be proud of yourself.

  8. This movie is very touching. it was really sad/happy to see the part when the black people in the field realized that their were black pilots. It makes me feel really terrible inside to see how bad we treated black people. They had to work twice as hard just to be treated equal. Well i think the lesson is never give up. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something. I also think that something like this should be taught in school. It's really important everyone should learn about this. Some people from the Tuskegee Airmen group were at Obama's inauguration so that shows that it is important.

  10. This was a very inspiring movie. I thought it tought many lessons of bravery and to never give up when things seem immposible. The tuskegee airmen and many other black americans had to work hard to be equal to everyone else when they deserved to be treated like anyone else. I think this movie a great lesson and should be noticed and should be tought more widely in school.

  11. I think that the Tuskegee Airmen video provides a lesson about how people should be judged not by the color of their but the content of their character. This movie was in the time when whites and blacks were divided and all of the color pilots showed the world that color people are just as good as white people and we should all be equal. The movie had some very harshful parts when the white people judged the colored people harshly by telling them they can't go to certain camps because they were colored. In the end the whites wanted Lee because he was the greatest pilot they had ever known and had saved their buts when the Germans snuck up on them. I think the Tuskegee pilots should be taught widely in school now since that Barack Obama was sworn into office and became our 44th president and the Tuskegee pilots are just some of the first steps to making African American future brighter.

  12. The Tusgegee Airmen was a very good movie. It was heartwarming and very sad. It taught all of us a lesson because you should never give up; like those black pilots didn't. Martin Luther King Jr. never gave up and delivered his speech. Barack Obama never gave up and became the president of the U.S.I thought that the movie inspired me to be something no body has ever been before. I think that the Tuskegee Airmen should be taught everywhere becuase the lesson it teaches is unbelievable. When you reading the textbook it's like oh, they tried to be a pilot. when you watch the movie you see that it took bravery and guts to become an airmen especially if you're black. When the italy pilot wanted the black pilot that said a lot because he thought black's couldn't do anything. All the whites treated the blacks without respect. I liked the movie

  13. This movie was a amazing movie no matter how sad it was. It made me realize all of the struggles that African Americans had to go thorugh just to get what they what and they were still picked on and outcasted. I think this movie should most definatly be talked and taught about in school because it is real inspiration. I thought this movie was really awesome!!!!

  14. The movie provides quite a few valuable lessons for us. It shows us that no matter what anyone says or does to put us down or tear our dreams apart, that we should shoot for the stars and hope that we succeed. It also shows that it doesn't matter what color your skin is or what your background is, we are the same and that no single person is better is better than another. The movie was very good and I agree with Micheal that it was inpirational too. It was a sad but happy movie. It made me feel bad to know how bad we treated black people but it was happy because those Tuskegee airmen stuck it out and made it all the way. Infact, they really helped make America the way it is today. Yes I think that the story of those men should be told more widly throughout the school because not many people would know or even care about what happened if they didn't see it with their own eyes. I think kellie is right, it really took guts to stay in the game and accomplish what those men did.

  15. The Tuskegee airmen where very proud, and i believe your piloting skill and wits don't depend on what your skin colour is. They followed their goal, and became the best of the best, even better than the whites.
I do believe there is a lesson with this movie, and it would be something like "Coloured people are as good as any other people."

    ReplyDelete
  16. Correction:They where better than some whites.
Also, I think of the Tuskegee airmen as great rolemodels as i want to be a pilot one day, and someone may try to make me fail because of something wrong with me.

  17. This movie taught us that no matter your skin color, everyone has talents that they are good at. it doesnt matter if you are white, black, or any other racial ethnicity. It also taught us that you should never give up and that you should keep on trying.
I think that this was a great movie and that teachers should teach the storries of the Tuskegee airmen to their students because it is a great storrie that teaches us a lot about how people were treated back then becauyse of the color of their skin.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Before the movie I had never heard of the Tuskegee airman. I just thought they were another group of pilots. This is a very good movie even though it became sad. It made me think about why everyone acted harshly to each other. Nobody was doing anything wrong. I appreciate those men that kept doing what they liked even though they were treated badly by their white captains (I think they wished that they could be as good the African Americans).

The Tuskegee airmen teaches us to not judge others just because of their skin color, gender, or where they came from. People sometimes still do that today. Another is to treat people nicely. Those white pilots thought that the Tuskegee airman weren't good at flying. But they prooved those pilots wrong.

I think that this story should be taught more widely because these men never gave up. They were also one of the 1st African American pilots. Students need to know how people acted back then and not to act like that. This story also teaches to never give up and keep on doing what your good at.

  19. I really liked the movie. It had comedy and tragedy. I think that the movie and the true story should be taught more widely among adolesence. This film shows the problems of racial hostility in earlier years, and deserves to be known.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I really liked the movie, alot. I think it not only taught us that none of us should be judged by our races, but that if you have a dream (Martin Luther King is a great example for this) then don't give up on it. Fight no matter if people judge you, or try to stop you from getting to where you really want to be. Some of the men in that movie definately didn't give up just because people thought they weren't smart enough to become pilots becaue of their race or because they were afraid of death. Race, really has nothing to do with talent. We all are capable of doing great things. The Tusgegee Airmen Movie overall was wonderful; and it definately had a moral or a message that we all can learn from. I may have to buy this movie...I'm sure my family or friends would enjoy it. ^^

  21. The lesson in this movie tells us that even though people put them down and didn't treat them fairly, that can’t stop someone from living their dream. There is discrimination out there, and that might slow someone down, but should not stop them. I feel that this was a great movie and I loved it, even though most of the characters died and that was sad. I think this movie should be shown to every middle school because it has a very important lesson to teach. I thought that it was cool how the man at the end requested the Tuskegee’s for their escort.

  22. I think that this movie tries to explain that all men and or women are created equally. But as seen in this movie, there are people who are against this idea. But hard work and determination "played out" for the Tuskegee Airmen.

  23. The tuskeegee airmen was a petty good movie that had alot of good things that you could learn from watching. this movie gives people, especially african americans, hope to do anything in thier dreams. and not only to do it but to do it extrememly well. just because we may be rown, or white, or mexian, if we have blue eyes, green eyes, or even red eyes, if you do try, and try, and try, then what you re trying at will happen.

  24. I think that this movie has showed us a few lessons and one of those lessons is to never give up goal or dream. If you want to do something, do it. If anyone tries to stop you from doing something or they make fun about you, do not become weak, stay strong. No one can tell you what you can or cannot do. If you have a goal, start doing it step by step and do not let any obstacles stop you from reaching your goal.I think that this movie was really good and I liked it. I also think that this movie should be shown to every middle school because it teaches us a lesson.

  25. This was a great movie and I would recommend it to anyone. The Tuskegee Airman pilots remid us how we-americans and white people treated people before action was taken. It shows how to keep striving to succeed to matter what, even if it means wrecking your life. It reminds everyone how important this brake through was in racial equality. -These pilots were not just normal pilots they went through more pain just trying to be treated fairly.

You must be determined to keep going and never doubt yourself. If you don't think you can make it your not going to make it. They proved to the nation that African Americans do care about our country and no matter what they kept going, regarding their race.

I thought this was a really great movie even though it was very sad. It teaches everyone a valuable and emotional history lesson. It should be showed to more people and clearly would open everyone's eyes. :) :) :) -Kayley E eperiod

  26. I thought this was a wonderful movie. It taught me that no matter your skin color you can do whatever you want. Don't give up on your dream no matter what. If your the only won that is your ethnicity, who cares its your dream and if you believe than you can succeed. We need to treat each other by their personalities not by the outward appearance. So just because you look different we can all be friends.

  27. i think there are many lessons if u look at different characters points of view, for the generals,it would be dont judge a man by his skin, for the flyers it would be dont give up on ur dream, and there r probubly many more. I thought the ovie was great, i honestly thought that it was going 2 be a boring old history movie, but it was one that i would not mind seeing again, not saying ur movies r boring mr. veliz, cuz they arent. i do think that this event with the tuskegee airman should be taught in more skools. It is a good lesson, there are many class discussions u could have about it and it fills in 2 things that u can learn, race issues back in the day and pilots in WWII.

  28. The first thoughts that came out of my head from this movie was it was really sad. Though I know the movie wasn't aiming for us to start moping through all the sad moments, it was supposed to be teaching us that determination and motivivation is what you should strive for. Throughout the movie, I noticed that the airmen were treated differently because they were black especially the part when those two white men who asked who saved them figured out that the 3 black men saved them(which shunned them down). I remember the main charactar {...[forgot his name(was it walter?) ,oops]...} said that he wished that they would give them more respect despite the fact that he saved those guys lives and they were black. So, I think it was unfair for those black airmen to be treated that way, I mean they went through so much hard work and got no respect.

    ps. I liked the movie...

  29. I think the movie was great. The movie tells us that if we try and try again, we will succeed. Race and color don't matter if you are confident that you can do it. I think we should learn more about the Tuskegee Airman. They can teach us a few good lessons.

  30. oh yes, I forgot, this movie was definitely an inspiration to those who wanted to achieve thier goals.

  31. I think that these men where an important factor in segregation because of the fact that it showed other African Americans that they could do what they wanted to with their lives. You saw the faces on the slaves when the black pilots got out of their planes. They were shocked and very excited. I think that these pilots served as a major inspiration to those African Americans at the time who didn't think that they would be able to do anything with their life. Then you start seeing blacks playing football, and start joining in with everybody else and then MLK came and sealed the deal. :) hahaha but this should definately be taught in our American History classes because this was just as important as many other things that we study, maybe more.

  32. Tuskegee airmen was a great movie and set an example to believe in yourself and to never give up no matter what color or race you are. This story should be mentioned in books as an inspiration. The Tuskegee airmen is a good story to tell.It was the beginning of a major breakthrough for African Americans and this set up the role of MLK.

  33. I thought that this movie was very inspirational. It taught us that no matter what gender or race you are, you have just as equal a chance as anyone else. This movie also taught us that we should never give up even if the conditions are tough. These pilots were hated by their first captain but they didn't give up.

I loved this movie. It was emotional and educational. That combo isn't always exciting, but this movie caught my attention.

I think that this lesson should be taught more widely in school. These men were heros with a challange. They didn't let anything stop them from their goals. It is a truly amazing story.

  34. I think that this movie shows that it doesnt matter what your skin color is. for example in world war 2 many people thought that african americans wouldn't be good at anything but as fighter pilots they turned out to be the best. I liked the movie and I think that it tells a very important story. I think they should teach this kind of stuff more in school because it teaches that if you have a goal and stay committed to it nothing will stand in your way.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think this movie teaches good lessons about following your dreams. Another lesson is to fight for what you believe in. I think they should teach this story through out schools it has a very good story to inspire teens. I liked the movie because it makes a good point. It showed us how life was for Africian Americans during WWII

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with all of you. I think that many of the people who walked away was becauswe they just didnt want to die. Ican believe that this movie taught that we are all different in a special way. I dont think that the Captins didnt realize that. Pretty much no one did. but i think that the black prisoners were inspired when the guys landed in that field and found that colored people were driving them.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think that this movie teaches you that no matter who you are, what you look like, what you sound like, you are capable of doing anything, the only one that can stop you is you.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Alright. This movie was great. I honestly believe so. But I was about to walk out at first. Because the white man was racest. That made me livid. But, the fact that the Black men stood thier ground and kept thier cool was the awsome part. They stood for what they believed in and stayed there. And when they get thier chance to go serve thier country in a war, they take it more serious then the white. Anyway, they are no different than anybody else, so thats proves its point. And I think that it should be shown more often around sckools, because it lays out the truth flat out. Im a rednek, and I have no problem AT ALL about black people, and thats the same message that needs to be spread. EVERYONE is equal. No matter what color they are. God dont just love one race, so why should you. The Bible says "Love God Love People". Not one race of a man, not one sex, but ALLLLLLLL people.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What lessons do you think the movie provides for us?
That everyone is the same, even if they have a different race, color, size, and shape.

How do you feel about the movie?
I really liked it, but i thought it was really sad, with the blood, and people dying.

Do you think that the story of the Tuskegee pilots should taught more widely in school?
Yes, because i think that ever kid should know what happened back then, and know how much back then changed to make right now.

  40. This movie was very good. It was a tradgedy and yet it had some light and happiness through the blinds. It had a certain elequence and hardship that until friday i knew none about. This story should be taught in schools all over. It tells the story of the first african american pilots in world war 2. People litterally were dumbfounded at how educated these pilots were, they werent held back just by the color of the skin but by the obstacles they wanted and had to overcome. They didnt have the sky as the limit, but the moon. Why even stop there?

  41. I thought this was a good movie!!! It Thought us that no matter what color your skin is, or where you are from people are people!! they can all do the things they set there minds to... for an example in the movie the 2 white men didn't believe that black people could save them but they did and they can!! I thought this was a really good movie... and sad, but the bloody parts were yucky and i had to look away at bloody parts. Yes!! I think that this story should be taught in school. its really important because this is the past and people need to learn what happend back then. And how we got to were we are now. oh and sorry about blogging late i forgot because i didnt feel good this weekend!

  42. i agree with Dusti and Zeneta. and i loved the movie!!!it made me sad that the people treated the other people bad becouse of their skin color and i think that it was good the train man and the other dudes stayed even though the white people were mean to them. i also think that we should all persue (?) our dreams even if they seem impossible to do, becouse if those men could do their dreams than so can we. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think that this was not only a good movie in terms of the film, but also in that it had a great meaning to it. I showed a great message to blacks that no matter what color your skin is you dont have to be a certain kind of person. It also, i think, gives a message to blacks and whites that no matter how many people or who are conspiaring against you, if you just keep on going on you can get almost anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I also agree with Kirsten in that although this story was sad, we all should get the chance to learn about it...

  45. First off I would like to say, this has been a really good movie that opened my eyes. I must admit I did cry and love these kinds of movies. It taught us not to be racist and that anyone can do anything if you put your mind to it and you set a high goal for yourself. The movie was really sad because of the graphic pictures and people dying. I dont like it when people dye:(

It should a little bit be taught in school but not as much as others because It was important but they are not the only people who did something for the first time or was the first. There was many cultures, sex, color and religions who did alot too. So yes it should be taught but as well as other nations too. To be equal of course. Me sierra and montgomery were all sad at the end of the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  46. the movie is an example of when someone is discriminating against you because of race, religion, sex, age, or anything else you could do what is right and keep trying or take the easy way out and quit. I feel that the movie was very inspirational and it should be shown at least as an after school or extra credit assignment. i thought the movie was good but you probably shouldn't show it to anyone younger than us. the cussing and the blood even if it was fake might scare the sixth graders.

    ReplyDelete
  47. think that this movie was very good and that the what we could learn from this movie is to never give up, anyone can succeed, never panic, and chase your dreams. Those pilots from tuskeegee never gave up and they succeeded and they never let a bomber get shot down in all of their career. anyone can succeed no matter their skin color or gender because those men from tuskeegee worked hard and they succeeded at what they loved to do. never panic because if you panic you can end up in a sticky situation and if you panic something bad will happen like that guy that stalled in the airplane and panicked and didn't know what to do and he crashed. if you chase your dreams good things will come like that little boy in the field he always wanted to be a pilot and he became a pilot (Lawrence Fishburn) because he wanted to be a pilot bad enough and he made it happen

  48. I would like to say, this movie would have to be one of my favorites of all time! It has really shown me a great visual of what happened! Sorry, this is so late, but Mr.Veliz knows why!

    1. I think the lesson for this movie is, regardless of color, if you want to be something then you won't let anyone stop you. Also, that if you have enough courage to move on, you will do that and fulfill your dreams.
    2. I think that is movie is AWESOME! In my opinion, not only does it teach us about history, but it shows that if you have a dream to be something in life, you can make that dream come true regardless of what people say and do.
    3. Yes, I do think the story of the Tuskegee pilots should be taught in every school. First, it is apart of Black/American history. Secondly, it could change people in a positive way, by showing you can do anything you want to do!

Mr.Veliz I think this was an AWESOME movie. GREAT CHOICE!

    ReplyDelete
  49. The lessons I think the movie provides for us is to never give up. For example, when one of the trainees wanted to quit because he was afraid of dying, Lt. Lee told him if he let himself believe he was going to die, he was going to die, but if he kept positive and believed he was going to live and fight for his country, he was going to live. I also really liked the movie. It was sad watching the airmen die, but is was also awesome watching the Germans BLOW UP!!

  50. This movie tells everyone to follow their dream and if they believe in themselves, anything is possible.I thought the movie was really good. It showed me how hard some people had to work to follow the dreams.
Yes, if more people could see the movie I think it would be really good. People need to understand that they have a good life where they don't have to worry about things people had to worry about back then.Lots of people struggled like the Tuskegee Airmen back in the day and thanks to the wonderful people that have helped us out in the past, people don't have to worry about as much as they did then.

  51. I thought this movie was really good. I thought the way it showed us how important these men were, was amazing(: It really showed me, at least that I should never give up on my dream. no matter how many times someone says I will never achieve it. Because, that's what these men did. Even though they were told by so many to go home, get lost, and never come back. They still tried and tried, until they met their goal. (:

  52. I felt that the movie had depth. It was not only informative, but heartwarming as well. I believe that the Tuskegee Airmen were a symbol of hope for African Americans around the nation. In the movie a jailed African American even said with a tear in his eye, "They're Negro fliers!" The airmen were a fantasy, a dream, that no man back then would have believed could ever come true. The Tuskegee Airmen were the twigs that would help set the logs of integration ablaze throughout the country. Though the only reason the airmen actually became pilots was because the NAACP were filing a lawsuit against the government. Coincidentally, the day after the lawsuit was filed president Franklin D. Roosevelt allowed African Americans the right to fly planes. But the government wasn't all that gloriful, in the same town African American men were being tested with syphilis. Four hundred men, who if they even knew they had syphilis knew nothing more about it as though it were a common cold, were being observed to see how this disease had an effect on their bodies. Even though the treatment did exist those men were being left to die. So though the Tuskegee Airmen were a step closer towards integration there still was a much larger step in the horizon just waiting to be taken.

  54. The movie shows that all people and all races can do whatever they want if they try their hardest. Even if you are another race doesn't mean that you should be excluded from other groups. But other than that i thought it was a really good movie. It was funny but also kind of sad in some parts. And yes I don think it should be taught in schools. It shows that everybody can do what they want and it proves that people were created equal.

  55. The Tuskegee Airmen provided a deep and just really, really, important lesson. Nothing is impossible. These airmen began as men who were hated by racist and others. But they pushed them aside as best as they could. And what was their reward? They became one of the best airmen in the army, respected and all.

I really liked this movie. It was educatoinal, deep, emotional-----it was really good. It provided really deep and philosophical thoughts into my head.

I think the Tuskegee airmen should be taught in shcools. It not only related to history, but to guidance. Students could really learn a lot.

  56. Hey, this is soooooo late. Actually I couldn't find the link to the posts until now. Well, I really don't know what I did to get here... I just clicked on random links and then one link on the link brought me here. Long story.
ANYWAAAYY!!! I really loved the movie. It was very touching to me. It was sad the way whites disregarded the blacks so low. especially at Tuskegee, the white comamder doubted their abilities because of their color. He even made them take the test again because he beleived that they cheated and really didn't know it. The scores sure showed him wrong! I hated how he was so hard on that one guy (forgot his name!!!!) for just showing some new and pretty cool moves. I bet he regreted it when the guy did suicide in one of the planes. It really showed us that, with determination, anything is possible. Train thought that Walter would never had gotten a award for bombing the enemy battle ship just because he was black. It was sad he didn't live to see Walter get the medal and the promotion. I think this story should definately be taught more at school. This story is so inspiring. I think they should make a holiday for them. then they can be remembered by their amazing accomplishments of doing what was thought to be impossible. Then teachers could teach future generations about this important moment in history in their class and encourage them to learn about it at home too.
By the way, Thank you for playing this movie Mr. Veliz, I really got a lot out of it!!

  57. If there was not a better lesson to be learned is that effort is key. For a group of men who were routinely discriminated because society thought of them as lower and worthless beings, the army is unexpected. But because of perseverance, effort, and optimism, they would realize that they can still have a place in history no matter who told them different. Many lessons could be learned from from this movie (based on a true story), discrimination is like killing the soul and also the perseverence and lack of fear will TRULY work to ones advantage.

I apologize for this being so late... But this movie has an indescribable amount of lessons and can teach not only our, but future generations to appreciate all living beings regardless of color, gender, and size. I have truly learned so much just from a small hollywood filled reflection of these peoples hardships and has made me appreciate my community and friends more than ever.
