Apollo 13: Good history or a look at the future?

I hope you all enjoyed our movie from last week, Apollo 13. As is usually the case, true stories make the best movies.

For us, it is an especially important time to be thinking about the space program. As you may know, the space shuttle (our current space vehicle) is reaching the end of its life. It will soon be taken out of use, and there is a huge debate raging over what - if anything - will replace it. With a return to the moon being put forth as a goal of NASA, any future space vehicle would have to be more like those in the Apollo program. Our space shuttles are incapable of going to the moon.

As you might imagine, any new program would involve billions of dollars. One side of the debate argues that the benefits to science that would be realized are worth all of the money needed. The other side argues that in a time of such difficult economic problems, it would be irresponsible to spend money in space.

Your generation will have to pay for much of whatever is decided in this debate. Whether it's paying the billions that the program will cost if we decide to return to the moon, or the potential scientific advances if we decide to cancel NASA's plans. What do you think we as a country should do? Should we make the investment necessary to return to the moon? If so, why? If not, why not?

Again, I hope you enjoyed the movie. We'll be scheduling the next one in the next few weeks.

  1. with the economy so bad, i think that we shouldn't spend all of our money on space. now im not saying shut down the operation completely, because it would be really cool to explore space some more, but just do it at a different time. Now is not the best time. People right now need money to take care of families and bills and all that so, we should not spend all our money on the hole NASA space thing

  2. I don't think we should be investing in another trip to the moonright now because like Zoe said our economy is bad and I think we should be more focused on bringing that economy up to standards so we don't, as a country, go into a horrible debt.

  3. I think It would be cool to go to the moon but like Zoe and Megan said the necessary for going to the moon it not a big deal right now. We need to be thinking how that will effect other people in life down the road if we spend all the countries money now there might not be any left later.

I think it would be cool to go to the moon but we just don't need to do it when the economy is bad like this.

P.S. I did like the movie!!

  4. I agree with the Megan, Megan Ramba, and Zoe. Well I don't think that we should go throwing billions of dollars out the window to make another journey to space at this time but i do believe it would be benificial to science for us to make another trip to the moon. With the economy suffering right now i believe that now is not the time to spend even more money than we are already spending because this country already has lots of debt that will fall on us kids someday. I'm not discouraging the NASA space Program but at least not now! I definately think that they shouldn't shut down the Space Program down all together because the astronaunts make some extroidinary discoveries in space.

  5. I agree with Megan that our country should make the investment to go back to the moon. But I also think it's a not a good idea to make the instment right now. THe space program should not shut down, astronauts have made and still should make cool dicoveries.

  6. I agree with everyone i think it would be cool in a year or two to start planing for a trip into space but like everyone else said the econimy is bad now so we should wait till that is fixed.

  7. I agree with everyone also, as a country we should attempt to go back to the moon because new generations will be able to walk on the moon and also learn more about the moon. They should be able to make new discoveries just like we did. But like Luke said...we should wait until we have a better economy.

  8. I agree with everyone. We should go to space to learn more about the moon. The problem is the economy is so bad right now I don't see how we could afford to go to the moon. I don't thing we should go to the moon anytime this year or maybe even next year but whenever we get out of this economic crisis we should absolutely go. We need to learn more about the moon.

  9. I don't think we should spend billions of dollars to go to the moon right now. But maybe when our economy is fixed....

  10. I don't think we should be sending anyone up to the moon right now BECAUSE:
    1. Well our economy is bad right now, and there's always stuff on the news like millions of Americans losing their jobs and having to go to food banks, and stuff like that. So I think the government should be focused on the jobless Americans more than the moon,
    2. Since we have so many jobless Americans, it wouldn't be fair to make them have to pay more taxes if America does decide to send people up into space. If you don't have a job, you wouldn't be earning any money, so you would just be spending and not gaining anything.
    3. I really don't care if America never sends any more people to the moon. I mean, like, if we do get to have the American flag on the moon again, I would be like "Okay, that's cool." And if we don't ever have people on the moon again, I would be like "ah, that sucks, but whatever." I guess people are doing so many amazing stuff now a these days, that something truly amazing seems pretty everyday normal now.
If you don't understand what I'm getting at, read my post over again.

  11. I agree with everyone so far. Our economic is so bad right now and it would not be the right place to spend money YET!!!

  12. I agree with Angela that we should not be spending alot of money to go to the moon right now. I also think that NASA should try to make space shuttles a little less expensive and then try to use the extra money to supply more fuel for the ship so there are no more emergencies where the ship runs out of fuel.

    ReplyDelete
  13. First I just want to say that the movie was amazing. I agree that we shouldn't be planning any trips to the moon right now. With the state of the economy we just can't afford such an expensive trip. I mean it would be cool to make another trip when the economy is better, because we should learn more about the moon and space, but we just can't make our economy even more troubled. This really isn't a nessesary trip and i doubt that it will make a difference in our daily life, so we could do with out it. If they really need to take this trip then i say go ahead, (as long as I'm not up there i could care less) but before they do send anyone up ther they should think of the risks and if it is completely safe (which is almost impossible) and if something does go wrong it is entirely on their shoulders.

  14. I agree with Tiye and everyone else. I think we as a country should not be waisting our money on a trip to the moon. It would be really cool but our economy is really bad. Like Tiye said it would not affect our daily life. I do not think that NASA should shut down all together. It is a very cool space program. I do not think going to space is a must do on Americas list. America should be more worried about serious things. My advice to America is to remeber to always think twice. By the way I enjoyed th Movie. It was fantastico!!

I think that we should not spend our money on going to space. It is a great idea to go to the moon and alot has been learned so far, but we don't need to spend billions of dollars with the way the economy is. We do ot have that kind of money to spend on going to the moon. I would say save up, put a little bit of money in wait a little while and put a little bit more money in.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with Megan R. and others that I think we should not go back to the moon at this time, because the economy is bad.

Although, I do think the NASA Program should not shut down completely. They could cut back on their program until the economy picks up.

  17. I don`t like the sound of us having to pay for what they decide. I mean if they choose something that will cost alot and we have to pay for it, it would have to be something I am intrested in for me to go with it, but because it is space ships I guess I would like for them to go on with it. I am intrested in what is out there in the universe and if they stop no one would ever know. If you think about that it is kinda scary.
everyone so far, has said I think it is cool, but are economy is not doing so well and every body is also saying we should do it when we have the money. I my self agree with that.

P.S. I liked the movie and Today is my birthday!

  18. First of all i wish someone would disagree because this is getting boring and i want something to argue about but i still agree with everyone that we should wait until a couple of years because their are alot of people that can't support their families and lose their home so not right now because it is going to cause a major downfall in our ecomony!

  19. I think that we shouldn't worry about going to the moon right now, I agree with Maggie about when she said right now our economy isn't doing so good and if we can't get that straightend up then how can we send more people into space. I think we need to wait a few more years until we make any dicision about sending people to space. There have already been two things that have gone wrong that I know of and our nation wouldn't be able to handle another one any time soon. We need to just take our time and take things one at a time starting with our economy.

    ReplyDelete
  20. But if our economy was good and all I would love to see us make another attempt to go to the moon because if it came out successful it would boost our country up a little more and make everyone a little more relaxed and not as stressed (sorry if I spelled stressed wrong I really don't know how to spell it). I would love to go to the moon, (BUT ONLY IF I KNEW EVERYTHING WAS GOING TO GO AS PLANNED)!!!

  21. I agree with evryone. I think learning about the moon would be great. I also think that we should keep the space shuttles up and running. Our country needs a better economy and more control of it like knowing how much money we would need to spend before spending it and then not having a lot of money.

  22. I thought the movie was very good it was thrilling and you didn't know what was goiin to happen next. To the topic, I agree with Tyler sending people to the moon isn't our main priority right now. I think our government has more important things to deal with. I am not saying that we shouldn't learn about the moon and space because I don't think we learn enough about those subjects, but i think we should hold off on sending people to the moon right now. It costs alot of money to get everything prepared for the launch and in this economy we just don't have the money right now.
    Again the movie was GREAT!!!!!!

  23. I agree with everyone that the economy is bad right now. That doesn't mean that we can't send people to the moon when it gets better though.I really want someone to go to the moon again, but like I said, not until the economy gets better so we don't loose billions of dollars.

First, I want to say that I loved Apollo 13! I've seen it a bunch of times and it's new every time.
I agree with most people in the "Don't go to space until our economies out of the toilet" department, but we COULD possibly find a new resource in space that could boost our economy enormously, even though it's unlikely, so there's always that to think about. I admire the men on that spacecraft and their bravery, the way they handled the fact that it was very likely they would die.

  25. I loved the movie and I think I will find it and watch it again. Everyone is totally is like on the same page as me for I think that with the economy so bad I think we should not invest in the project yet, but maybe in like a few years. More reasearch and exploration of the moon would be great but not now. Maggie stated what I wanted to say exactly about the people and the taxes, one of the many issues we have that should be fixed. I think that more than science more things that are more trouble should be fixed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I thought the movie was exiting and always kept you wondering what would happen next. I agree with... a lot of people that the economy has some issues that are a higher priority right now. I don't think we shouldn't stop sending people to space, but I think we should wait until the economy has gotten better before we spend that much money on something when there are more important (and expensive) things that we need to do. I agree with Christine, the men on the spacecraft were very brave, and I thought it was a very good movie. I am glad I chose to do the extra credit video.

  27. I agree that right now it might not be the best time to go back into outer space, so I think we should wait until we would no longer have so many economic hardships. In my opinion we should postpone the next trip until the benefits outweigh the cost. So I feel that it's the same as a personal budget: if you can't afford it you wait until you can.

  28. I think thst the movie was really cool and actiony. I kind of knew what was going to happen with all these adventure movies but it was a really good movie.I don't think we should go to the moon and have to pay for it yet because the economy is down right now. It would be fine to do that in a couple years. I think the government government has more important things to worry about right now.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think it would be a bad idea to invest money to go back on the moon because our economy is hurting. Getting America's economy going again is more important and urgent right now. We can put it off until our economy is better.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I THINK WE SHOULD GO TO THE MOON. I think that with the technology we have today, a trip to the moon might also mean countless trips to the bank - people love seeing space stuff. When any rocket or shuttle goes into space, it attracts millions of people to the space center. Anyone who doesn't go will probably watch it on TV. We might also find something on the moon that's worth a lot of money and even gives NASA huge profits. The point is, it might actually boost our economy to send somebody to the moon.

Also, the recession is coming to an end, and by the time engineers can come up with a good enough rocket, our economy will be in a good enough position to lose a few billion dollars.

  31. Tori:I agree with Kierra. We should all come together and work as 1 to have another Apollo. The movie was very good. I like when they were in danger everyone came together to help it become alright. The movie was very moving and I nwould love to watch it again.

  32. I agree with anyone that said we shouldn't be sending any people up to the moon right now. So that means I disagree with anyone that says we should send people to the moon. Even if you say the recession is going to end and stuff, that doesn't mean the people without jobs are suddenly going to get their jobs back. We would have to open more jobs and stuff which will take time. We need to focus on ourselves right now, not the moon.
And IF WE DO decide to send anyone up into space, let's try a new planet like Mars or something. That's much more exciting.
(Oh yeah, Tyler, you spelled stressed right, haha)

  33. i think we should go 2 the moon rite now becuz of global warming!!! i believe in it and i also believe that the earth wil explode one day and if humans dont find a way 2 live on the moon or some other planet then wer gonna explode along with it!!! so we had better start working on a way 2 liv somewhere else cuz i dont think we wil all fit on the space station thing!!!!
    p.s. any1 care 2 argue:)

  37. I agree with most people about not sending people to space. I really think we do not need to wreck our economy even more than it has been wrecked, but I do think it would be cool to send people to space. If we knew everything would go as planned all of this would have already happened, haha, but it hasn't gone on as planned so it hasn't happened yet and the money just keeps getting spent. If we do end up sending anyone or two/three/four ect. people to the moon we should plan on doing it when our economy recovers. My generation is already going to be paying for what is going on right now. We probably won't be able to afford to pay for going into space also. As a country we need to work on the problems we already have.

I did enjoy the movie and cannot wait until there is another one!

  40. I think the wisest thing to do would be to take one more mission to the moon strictly for data and for analyzing the whole landscape maybe even drilling so we can get a full understanding of the moon and its possibilities for the future when we have the right technology. I really think the moon has a lot of potential in the future for energy, communication, and maybe even life. We need to know what lies beyond what we see from our homes.

  41. Moon shmoon, I think that with our economy down the drain money we should be helping with bills and edducation not with moon rocks and fancy rocket ships, (no offense to all you future astronaughts, it not a bright future by the way). But i do think when the time is right a trip to the moon will be called for. What if the cure to cancer is on the moon(not likely) but what if it was, we wouldn't knoow what we are missing. but right now is not the right time to do high techy explorations. By the way I really liked the movie especially when that dude puked, that was sooo funny, but nasty and i would totally puke to if i was him.

  42. One of the best things to do right now is to go to the Moon and focus on things at the extreme as in doing experiments on the moon that we never even thought of. The technology advances that could be made from some of the discoveries on the moon could benefit education and if we are lucky and thinking outside the box, even our economic state. For me it's a go...not Houston we've got a problem. =)

  43. Sorry I'm so late, we didn't get home until about 6:00 pm and then I had hockey practice from 7:30 to 9:00. I really loved the movie a lot. I think that we should wait to send anyone else into space with any tool that costs a lot of money, as this would put us where we were last year: in a financial crisis. Once the national economy is stabilized, then we can go back into space.

    ReplyDelete
  44. agree with everyone. I think we should think on it before we just invest in another trip to the moon. Like what Megan said, we need to be looking toward the future, and spending and saving our money for (I hope) the economy, and maybe there will be more moon trips. Like Kaleb said, we need to make more discoveries toward the moon. I think it would be a great investment.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well I think that it is obvious in what we should do. The economic times may be harsh, but is having an over-populated planet going to help the economy? We need to build another spacecraft capable of getting to the moon and set up a base there. Once that is achieved we can then proceed to mars. Finding new hospitable planets is important for the survival of humans and if our country can't come up with a few billion dollars we will pay the price when there is food and water shortages. Maybe we can develop technology here on earth to see new planets, but that won't get us there. The only way is to build another spacecraft that can reach the moon. In future times we will be able to have more advanced space traveling technology, but if we don't try now we are spelling out our own fate.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think that we should not pay for another trip because we've already studied the moon enough for now and we should stick with the information that we have now to understand it because people are being sent to the moon right after another, and I think that they should wait it out until the economy picks up so that we won't have to pay as much tax money. Of course, then I take the side of why do people pay money? Why do we use paper to stand for something that's not real? Why can't the world survive in harmony and not have to pay anything anymore? Of course, I already know the answer, since the time of Adam and Eve, we can't stop being selfish and greedy and inconsiderate toward others. But back to the point, I think that if we could share and get along, I would take the side of trying to go to the moon and get it so that people can survive there and on Mars, like Joseph said. But, since the economy is stinko, and the fact that i'm not aware that anyone is trying to help get the moon ready, I think that I would say point blank- there should be no more space travels, well we'll see if the economic health improves first; but untill then, no more space travel.

  47. I say we shouldn't spend money on a space shuttle going to the moon at this time. I say this because like Zoe and a lot of other people the economy is bad right now. Later when the economy isn't in such a hole it would be cool to send a space shuttle to the moon for the second time. It would be good for extra research too.
